About the Event

LEG 1 - TUESDAY 13 JUNE

During the first day of the race, the crews covered approximately 360 km, of the more than 2000 for this unprecedented five-leg edition.

After completing the first Trials valid for the Cento Anni dell'Aeronautica Militare Italiana Trophy at the Aerobase Militare di Ghedi, the crews turned towards first Desenzano. Then on to Sirmione, parading at the foot of the Castello Scaligero. The cars proceeded into the heart of the Veneto region to Piazza Bra in Verona, with a Passage Control in front of the Arena.

Along the Veneto side of the Po, the crews tackled a block of 9 Time Trials. Following the course of the river, they arrived first at Ferrara and then there were Lugo and Imola, which hosted the last Time Trials of the day in its famous Autodromo. Leaving Imola, Forlì welcomed the race in Piazza Saffi for the second consecutive year. The Time Control at the end of the leg was held in Piazza Andrea Costa in Cervia-Milano Maritima.

LEG 2 - WEDNESDAY 14 JUNE

At first light in Romagna, the second leg of the 1000 Miglia 2023 started from the Pisignano Military Airport. After the Frecce Tricolori at the start in Brescia, a helicopter with a soldier suspended holding the tricolour inaugurated the start of the leg.

Once arrived in the Republic of San Marino, the crews took on the Time Trial block in the Montale Tunnel, an engineering masterpiece of the 1930s restored in 2012 after the bombings of World War II, valid for the Republic of San Marino Trophy. After the Passage Control in Piazza della Libertà with a view of the surrounding hills of Mount Titano, the Time Trial session between the Conca Torrent and Mount Altavelio preceded the first Average Trial of the event in the historic Montefeltro region.

The convoy returned along the Adriatic and crossed the centre of Pesaro, for the Time Control in Piazzale della Libertà. In front of Arnaldo Pomodoro's Sfera Grande, there was an ideal handover: the city of Gioachino Rossini that picked up the baton of Capital of Culture from Brescia and Bergamo, Capitals for all of 2023.

Continuing along the coast, the Freccia Rossa again passed through Senigallia before entering the Conero Regional Park: in the heart of the Mediterranean scrub, where breathtaking glimpses of sheer cliffs merge with the vegetation, there were 7 concatenated Time Trials and an Average Trial. After leaving the sea, the crews passed Loreto and Recanati before arriving at the Giardini Diaz in Macerata for the lunch break.

The competitors faced further sporting activities in the Marche region: 7 Trials in the territory of Corridonia, a Passage Control in Fermo and another block of Time Trials in the village of Montotto. The weather was not assisting the drivers and co-drivers who, after a morning of mild weather, were tackling this long leg in the pouring rain.

After the Time Controls in Rieti, the convoy set off in the direction of the Capital, where it was Villa Borghese to host the last Time Control of the day before the final platform in Via Veneto.

LEG 3 - THURSDAY 15 JUNE

The Red Arrow left the Capital at the first light of day with the participants called to tackle the longest leg of the 1000 Miglia 2023: 630 km with 4 Time Trials, 3 Average Trials, 5 Passage Controls and 3 Time Controls.

The first Passage Control of the day was held inside the Vigna di Valle Air Force Museum. After passing through Anguillara Sabazia, the crews performed an Average Trial along Lake Vico. With the Average Trial of Radicofani along the SP24, the Red Arrow intersected with a section of the Via Francigena to then enter the heart of the Val d’Orcia, where among olive groves and cypress trees they were awaited by another series of Time Trials; along the road of Monte Amiata instead the Average Trials of Castiglione d'Orcia were carried out and, after San Quirico, the Time Trials up and down the hills covered in golden wheat.

At the end of the morning, the magical setting of Piazza del Campo in Siena once again hosted the Red Arrow cars. The crews stopped for lunch at the Tartarugone in Piazza Mercato.

After lunch, the crews left the Siena province, crossing the Val d’Elsa and passing through Vinci, with Time Trials and Passage Control in Piazza della Libertà. In Pistoia, the cars of the Ferrari Tribute and the cars of the Red Arrow re-joined.

Once arriving in Emilia territory, the crews entered a series of characteristic Frignano villages that preceded the last Time Trials of the day in Formigine before passing through the centre of Modena, the beating heart of Motor Valley. After the last stop & go of the day at the Passage Control in Reggio Emilia, it was finally the turn of the finish line in Piazza Garibaldi in Parma, site of the last Time Control of the day. The participants then were able to recover by enjoying a well-deserved dinner in the enchanting setting of the Teatro Regio.

LEG 4 - FRIDAY 16 JUNE

The fourth leg of the 1000 Miglia 2023 started from Parma.

The day began with a block of 10 concatenated Time Trials inside the San Damiano Military Airport valid for the  One Hundred Years of the Italian Air Force  Trophy, followed by a Passage Control that gave the participants the opportunity to admire the restoration work on historic military aircraft up close. The race then passed through the territories of Oltrepò Pavese and Valle Versa, before arriving in Pavia for the Time Control along the Strada Nuova as far as Ponte Coperto and then heading west.

Then there was the eagerly awaited transit through Piedmont, an absolute new feature in the history of the re-enactment with only two precedents in the speed race, 1947 and 1948. Alessandria was the first municipality to welcome the historic convoy and hosted the crews for the race lunch, served among the iconic porticos of Piazza Garibaldi that recall the irresistible charm of the Belle Epoque.

The cars of the 1000 Miglia 2023 made their entrance into City Life, fresh from the Passage Control in Piazza Duomo.

LEG 5 - SATURDAY 17 JUNE

After the departure of the first car from Corso Sempione, the convoy passed in front of the Automobile Club headquarters for a Passage Control. Before leaving the city, there was also space for the last act of the Air Force Centenary celebrations at the headquarters of the First Air Region. After 8 concatenated Time Trials in the Treviglio area, there was a passage through Stezzano and the Kilometro Rosso innovation district, Europe’s leading private scientific and technological pole.

Unmissable was the stop in Bergamo, Capital of Culture 2023 together with Brescia, which hosted the last Time Trials of the event within the walls of the Upper City, which, together with the first Trials in the Castle, awarded the Trophy dedicated to Bergamo Brescia Italian Capital of Culture 2023 . Passing by the southern coast of Lake Iseo, the crews headed towards Brescia via Provaglio, Ospitaletto, Rodengo Saiano and Gussago, where they had the last Passage Control.
