About the Event
The fourth Mille Miglia, held in 1930, saw record participation and further cemented the race’s prestige. Alfa Romeo entered six factory-prepared 6C 1750 GS Testa Fissa Spider Zagato cars, driven by top names including Giuseppe Campari, Achille Varzi, and Tazio Nuvolari. Additional entries came from privateers and, for the first time, Scuderia Ferrari, making its debut with three Alfa Romeos.
Main rivals included OM, Maserati, Lancia, Bugatti, and a semi-official Mercedes-Benz SSK driven by Rudolf Caracciola. The race began at a relentless pace. After early retirements, the fight for victory narrowed to Varzi and Nuvolari. Following a close duel through central Italy, Nuvolari overcame a time gap and passed Varzi near the finish, completing 1,639.7 km in 16h 18m 59s, setting a new record.
Alfa Romeo secured the top four places, followed by OM, Mercedes-Benz, and further Alfa Romeo entries. Francesco Pirola and Angelo Guatta, in a 6C 1500 SS, won the 1.5-litre class, finishing 13th overall.
The event is remembered for the legendary headlight pass (sorpasso a fari spenti), in which Nuvolari allegedly turned off his lights at night to surprise and overtake Varzi—though accounts differ on the exact events.
