The Maserati company was founded in 1914 by Maserati brothers Alfieri, Bindo, Ettore, and Ernesto in Bologna, Italy. The oldest brother, Carlo, who worked for Fiat, Isotta-Fraschini and Bianchi, died of tuberculosis in 1910, 4 years before his brothers established a family business. In the 1920s Alfieri, Bindo, and Ernesto built 2-litre Grand Prix cars for Diatto. In 1926, when Diatto suspended the production of race cars, Alfieri Maserati took his design to the Maserati workshop to produce the first Maserati, the Tipo 26. The design of the Tipo 26 consisted of a steel ladder-type frame supporting a supercharged inline-8 1.5-litre engine with a three-speed manual transmission and an aluminum two-seater bodywork.
