About

The Pantheon Basel in Muttenz is a forum for classic car owners and enthusiasts with a museum on the topics of car and mobility on the road. The owner of the Pantheon is Pantheon Basel AG, a 100% subsidiary of Musfeld AG.

History

The initiator of the Pantheon Basel is the Basel entrepreneur Stephan Musfeld. Since childhood, he has been interested in cars. After he had his driver's license, he bought his first vintage car from his apprentice wage. Through contact with other classic car collectors, Stephan Musfeld found that Switzerland lacks an actual competence centre and suitable parking or maintenance spaces for classic cars. He thought about what to do about it and put out his feelers. By chance, he came across the now no longer used premises of the former Züblin repair and machine hall in Muttenz. The hall was built in 1965 by architects Janz and Spinnler and has a column-free diameter of 50 metres and a pre-stressed roof skin that is only 5 cm thin. The hall was thus the largest column-free space in Basel in the 1960s. This hall inspired him as a trained civil engineer and did not let him go. The implementation of the forum took almost two and a half years. The building was designed and implemented by Toffol architects Basel.

A ramp was built into the circular hall, which spirals upwards. The ramp begins as a driveway outside the building, leads further up into the interior and ends just below the roof. Both the roof and the walls are translucent, so that at night, when the hall is illuminated, the vehicles on display can be seen from the outside.

The Pantheon covers 7'500 m2, of which 3'000 m2 are part of the museum.

On 16 August 2008, the Pantheon Basel was opened, which is a museum, workshop, show stage, parking lot, meeting point and classic car sales outlet.
