Upon moving his family to Colorado, Cussler began collecting automobiles in the 1970s. His first was a 1946 Ford Club Coupe that Cussler bought for his wife for $400. Today, his collection includes over 100 cars ranging from the 1906 to the 1965 model year. The Cussler Museum was established in 2005 and has about 70 cars on display at any time. Cussler’s daughter, Teri, is the creator and manager of the Cussler Museum and sees to it that the cars on display are rotated periodically.
