Porsche 911 S/T

Chassis 0647 is one of five Porsche 911 STs specially prepared for the 1971 East African Safari Rally. Designed to withstand the extreme conditions of the event, this version benefited from numerous modifications: a reinforced bodyshell, large rear fender flares, a 40% limited-slip differential, and a 25 cm higher ground clearance.

Of the five examples produced, three took part in the rally, while this chassis was one of the two training cars. Once its mission was accomplished, it was sold to an enthusiast in Sweden, then passed into the hands of a German owner, who repainted it blue and adapted it for track use.

In 2007, the car was acquired by an American collector. Recognizing certain characteristics unique to the five Safari STs, he commissioned a complete restoration by specialist Gary Kempton, with the aim of returning it to its original East African Safari Rally specifications. He then chose to repaint it in the iconic green of the car driven by Björn Waldegard.

About four years later, the 911 changed hands again and joined the collection of another Porsche enthusiast, who regularly displayed and raced it.

In the late 2010s, Hugh Hodges, a renowned 911 ST expert, discovered that this car was not Waldegard's, but one of the two training cars. Chassis 0647 was then entrusted to Ed Palmer (Kundensport) for a faithful restoration to its original condition, with its light ivory finish.

After nearly ten years of ownership, its last owner decided to offer it for sale at the Geared online sale organized by Gooding & Company in August 2020.
