Information
1 of 4 300 SL factory competition 'Sportabteilung'
This example, stands out as one of only four steel-bodied competition-prepared W198 Gullwings. Unlike privateer-raced 300 SLs, this specific car was factory-modified and extensively used for racing development. It was equipped with a high-performance NSL-spec engine, Rudge knock-off wheels, ventilated drum brakes, and a competition-tuned suspension.
This car gained further significance when Stirling Moss and Georges Houel raced it in the 1956 Tour de France Automobile, finishing 2nd overall after overcoming early mechanical setbacks. Houel continued racing it until the late 1950s, after which it changed hands multiple times, remaining dormant for decades until its restoration began in 2008.
This car is one of just two remaining factory-raced Sportabteilung 300 SL Gullwings. With its documented competition history, legendary driver involvement, and recent restoration to its 1956 TdF livery, it is considered one of the most significant Gullwings in existence. The interior has been refurbished to original specification.
