1989 RS-200 IMSA Prototype
After the 1986 ban of Group B rallying, Ford had roughly 200 RS200s built but unused. A few were converted for rallycross and tarmac racing. One of these chassis was taken to create an experimental circuit-spec car aimed at the IMSA GTO / GTP-Lights market and potentially European prototype categories.
GTi Engineering (Milton Keynes), well-known for Audi and Ford competition projects, undertook the build. The team fabricated a completely new aero body over the RS200 tub, with widened tracks, low nose, large cooling ducts, and endurance-spec suspension and brakes.
The car was intended as an IMSA GTO entry under Ford-Cosworth power. Testing took place at Silverstone and Donington, but the IMSA programme never materialised due to costs and changing rules.
For years the car was stored in private hands and occasionally appeared in historic motorsport circles labelled RS200 IMSA Prototype L or RS200 LM.
It resurfaced after restoration in the early 2020s, wearing its period-style Marco Polo Hotels / #36 livery, and was shown at Silverstone Festival 2023, where it drew attention for being the only known circuit-spec RS200 built to near-IMSA specification.
