1976 German Grand Prix was held in rains at Nürburgring, in concern of safety, Niki Lauda boycotted the race, but the race still went on as usual. On lap 2, Lauda's car had a suspension failure, it hit the wall heavily and bounced back to the track, hit by another car, and burst into a huge fire ball. Lauda was trapped in the cockpit, and his helmet was thrown away by the hit, his face was directly exposed in the fire. Lauda's head was severely burnt, and to make it worse, the burning fuel emitted toxic gases to burn his lungs.
Several drivers stopped to rescue Lauda, among them Arturo Merzario ran into the fire to release Lauda's safety belts. After being rushed to the hospital, Lauda was almost sentenced to death.
