Information
Alfa Romeo 8C 2900B Le Mans Speciale Berlinetta 1938. The car that could have brought Alfa Romeo their 5th Le Mans win.
Raymond Sommer marked the fastest average speed per lap at 155 km/h but shortly after that the right front tyre blew up down the Mulsanne straight. He brought the car back to the pits and was sent back on track while still leading the race (it had an 11-lap lead at one point, the greatest ever in the race's history) but shortly after a mechanical malfunction made them retire the car for good. That might have been caused by overrevving the engine while trying to stop the car after its tyre blew out. Currently on permanent display at the Museo Storico Alfa Romeo
