Information
At 1982 United States Grand Prix West at Long Beach, Andrea de Cesaris took the only pole in his F1 career. Niki Lauda saved tyre for the race so de Cesaris got P1 in qualifying. This made de Cesaris the youngest pole sitter, he held the record until 1994 when Rubens Barrichello took it.
During the race, de Cesaris did well in the early phase of the race, gained a big gap ahead of Lauda. Then he was held up by a lapped car and Lauda overtook him, but still he sat comfortably at P2 with good pace, that was a satisfying result for Alfa Romeo too. Later the car had a brake problem, and de Cesaris was affected by smoke from another car's engine. He lost control and spun off, hit the wall and seriously damaged the car, ruining the hope for his first podium However, he didn't wait too long, only 2 races later, he finished P3 at Monaco.
The chassis was damaged and never used again.
