Information
Carbon fibre version of 179.
In 1981, Alfa Romeo announced many times that they would built a 179 with carbon fibre monocoque - the older versions had aluminum monocoque. But they didn't make it because the main focus was still 179D as it had problems with ground effect. By 1982, Alfa Romeo finally had time and resource to build the new 179, but at that time, they had already developed the brand new 182. So the carbon fibre 179 was only used as a back up car at one race, 1982 South African GP. The car was stored in the corner of Alfa Romeo's garage, covered all the weekend. The new 179 never appeared again in any races, currently displayed at Alfa Romeo museum, officially referred to as 179F test car.
