Bruno Giacomelli took pole with this car at 1980 United States Grand Prix with almost 8 tenth ahead of Nelson Piquet. It was a huge surprise for backmarker Alfa Romeo to be the fastest through the weekend. During the race, Giacomelli built up a huge gap and led comfortably, until his car broke down half way of the race.
