The founder of the Institute for International Research, the world's largest conference organiser, sold in 2005 for £768 million.
As one of the largest donors of the Conservative Party, he was made a life peer as Baron Laidlaw in 2004. Despite this, he continues to split his time between an apartment in Monaco and an estate in South Africa.
