The 400 series differed in its chassis design by having an offset lower frame (called the lower frame chassis). The vehicle, which was lowered by around 12.5 cm, had a lower centre of gravity, giving much better roadholding characteristics.

The eight-cylinder in-line engine newly designed by chief designer Fritz Fiedler was used starting from the Type 410, which was launched in spring 1931. Valve control was handled by a single overhead camshaft, driven by a master shaft. All Horch eight-cylinder in-line engines installed in subsequent years were based on the 'Fiedler engine'.

Only three vehicles of this type are known to survive worldwide.
