Five months after the Type 303, Horch launched another model that was technically identical but had a shortened chassis. It served as a basis for sporty super-structures. But the new Type 304 was not designed for sports performance.
It soon became clear that the engine power of 60 hp was insufficient for a weight of almost two tonnes.
This led to the widening of the cylinders in the engine block by boring in the first year of production, which did increase the engine's power output to 65 hp. With this refinement of the model, the model pair 305 (long wheel-base: 3.45 metres) and 306 (short wheelbase: 3.16 metres) went into series production on 1 December 1927.
