The BMW 2K2 took its name from one of the most legendary BMWs ever built: the BMW 2002. Designed as a two-door, four-seater sports sedan, it was a modern reinterpretation of the car that paved the way for the BMW 3 Series. Developed at lightning speed, the 2K2 was the first BMW to have its entire initial design and engineering phase completed using digital tools. Work began in 1997 and a fully feasible prototype was ready by 1999. While the 2K2 was never given an E-number or approved for serial production, it came remarkably close, designed to be a lightweight, driver-focused alternative to the 3 Series Compact. With the capability to house a range of small yet potent engines, it would have delivered an impressive power-to-weight ratio. Though it never made it to production, the BMW 2K2 stands as a bold experiment in digital design and lightweight engineering, a true blend of tradition and innovation.
