Information
During 1988 Italian GP, Nigel Mansell was unwell and forced to rest, so the test driver Jean-Louis Schlesser took his place. Schlesser was an outstanding endurance and rally driver at that time, but he only had one F1 race experience 5 years ago. During the race, Senna was leading with two Ferraris chasing him. With only two laps left, Senna was lapping Schlesser. Schlesser locked up his wheels, Senna thought he would lose control but he managed to get into the corner. The two car collided and Senna retired due to suspension damage. Schlesser did an apology to Senna in tears, although he didn't consider this as his own fault.
The Ferraris took a 1-2 victory on their homeland, and this was the only race that was not won by McLaren in 1988. There're only two seasons with only one race won by another team, 1988 and 2023, coincidentally the team with one victory are both Ferrari.
