The concept of the Invisible Van is to live cameras on one side of the van to project the surrounding environment onto screens on the opposite side, to make the whole van 'disappear'.
Richard Hammond built the van specifically to test if the outlandish 'active camouflage' used on the Aston Martin V12 Vanquish in the 2002 James Bond film Die Another Day could actually work in real life on a standard TV budget.
Because it was a DIY project using standard electronics, the video feed had a noticeable delay. When Hammond drove past a background object, the image displayed on the side of the van lagged slightly behind reality, making it painfully obvious to confused onlookers in Cranleigh that they were just looking at a wall of televisions.
Unlike iconic Top Gear vehicles like the Nissank or the indestructible extraordinary Geoff that ended up in museums, the Invisible Van didn't have a long life. Because the plasma screens and cameras were expensive and easily removable, the production team almost certainly stripped the van back to its original state immediately after filming ended.
