Information

This 1989 Volkswagen Corrado was converted into a cabriolet by German coachbuilder SGS, and it was presented by Carl Hahn, the then CEO of VW Group, at the 1989 Geneva Motor Show eight months after launch of the coupe as one of a quartet of design studies for alternate Corrado body configurations. SGS fabricated the power-operated top, which featured computer-controlled electro-hydraulics, five bows, Happich fabric, and a hard tonneau cover, and the speed-activated rear spoiler was able to be retained. The body was refinished with metalflake black paintwork, and the interior was redone with magnolia leather upholstery, wood trim, custom color-matched gauges, and a prototype Happich steering wheel. SGS also added color-matched 16″ Borbet Type A alloys, reinforced the chassis for the conversion, converted the hatch to a trunk, and had bespoke rear quarter windows made.

The car was purchased by its current owner in 2021 and imported to the United States, where it underwent ~$63k in work that included overhauling the top mechanism, servicing the supercharged 1.8-liter inline-four, remounting the refinished Borbets with new tires, dry-ice cleaning, and refreshing the interior.

It also has been featured in multiple publications and shows, most recently in the December 2025 issue of Performance VW, and was the featured subject on an episode of Petrolicious.
