Under the young Ruf, the firm progressed and was recognized in 1981 by the German government as an automobile manufacturer. Thus, Ruf could assign his own unique serial numbers. U.S. certification followed in 1988, but only one new CTR came to the States, in 1989 — with the unusual serial number this car has.
