Information
Driven by Nelson Piquet Jr. for the entire season.
Flavio Briatore was desperate for wins, as their last Grand Prix win was during the 2006 Japanese Grand Prix (October 8th 2006). The 800th Formula 1 Grand Prix was set to be held at the new Marina Bay Street Circuit. The 2008 Singapore Grand Prix proved that Renault could fight for the win, as they showed pace on the practices. However, on qualifying all went down, as the cars were classified in P15 for Alonso, and P16 for Piquet Jr. On race day, both Renaults did an unconventional strategy, as Alonso started the race with very few fuel, pitting on lap 12. On Lap 15, Nelson Piquet Jr. crashed his Renault on turn 17, as there were no exits, the Safety Car was called in, when the Safety Car left, everyone else did their pit stops (back in 2008 the pits during SC period were against the rules) so Alonso took the race lead, which could held until the lap 61, when he crossed the line to win the 2008 Singapore Grand Prix, Renault was filled in joy, but the darkest secrets were yet to be revealed. On 2009, Nelson Piquet Jr. was fired from Renault following the 2009 Hungarian Grand Prix due his poor results, which at same, opened the Pandora box. On September 28th 2008 (the race day), Nelson Piquet Jr. had a meeting in the morning with Flavio Briatore and Pat Symonds. With a map, they showed him where he needed to crash to cause the SC and give Alonso the win. Piquet Jr, scared of losing his contract accepted to do that. A footage showed that Nelson Piquet Jr. even did an essay of the crash on Formation Lap prior the actual crash on lap 15. Nelson Piquet Sr. asked FIA for inmunity for Piquet Jr. in exchange of share all the information. on September 4th 2009, Renault were charged with conspiracy charges, which made them to lose many sponsors. On September 16th, Renault could revoke the DSQ and charges as Pat and Flavio left the team (If Renault did something similar again within the next 2 years, they would be PERMANENTLY EXCLUDED from Formula 1). Pat Symonds received a 5 years suspension from any F1 activity, while Flavio Briatore received a permanent suspension, which also involved any driver related to him. Until recent years, the French court made possible the revoke of the suspension, which allowed Flavio to return to Formula 1, being now a key role on Alpine.
