Information
Specially converted by Matra for Pope John Paul II's 1986 visit to Lyon. Its rear section was extensively redesigned to create an open platform with a raised standing area, steps, and grab rails, allowing the Pope to greet and bless the crowds safely. Chosen for its modern and approachable image, the Espace reflected the Catholic Church's desire for openness and accessibility. It was used during the papal visit from 4 7 October 1986, notably at the mass at Eurexpo attended by around 350,000 people and the youth gathering at Gerland with 50,000 attendees, making it one of the most distinctive French popemobiles ever built.
