The car crashed on the German Autobahn just after being delivered from the factory.
Another car suddenly pulled out to pass a truck while the owner was powering along at 230 km/h in the overtaking lane.
The two collided, with the 959 slamming into a guardrail and overturning before coming to a stop - its roof and side body panels were severely damaged.
The original owner sold it to a German car collector, and with the help of the Auto Becker dealership, it was rebuilt as the world's only roofless 959.
Raceline Feustel restored the bodywork, which took 4,000 hours to complete.
An electric roof and a hardtop were provided to the owner, who could choose to drive the car as a convertible, speedster, or coupe.
The car was presented at the 1989 Frankfurt Motor Show at the Auto Becker stand.
