Information
Designated 'C20' the second prototype model for the Dakar Rally.
Originally owned by Porsche Engineer - Helmuth Bott, colloquially known as the father of the AWD Porsche.
Originally produced as a Metallic Brown 911 SC, Bott had donated the car during a period in which Porsche was short on funds, and struggled to find cars in order to develop their AWD system.
Initially converted to AWD by using a 924 open spool front differential, with a simple driveshaft running through a torque tube driven off the gearbox.
During this process, Bott personally used the car as his 'winter beater' testing the car for it's on road handling characteristics in development.
Repurposed as a 953 development mule, and support vehicle for the 1984 Paris - Dakar Rally, post partnership with Rothmans.
In the process the car was blown apart, stripped completely and seam welded, all gearbox, engine and suspension mounting points beefed up for the rally. This stage also proved pivotal to develop a centre differential and stronger front suspension. for more articulation.
Refit with a 3.2 l Carrera engine, detuned for the lower grade fuels available in Africa.
Fibreglass front guards and bonnet, plexi-glass windows (bar windscreen) and drilled aluminium bumpers fitted to aid lightening.
Rear windscreen converted to hatchback, believed for access to a spare wheel for rally, and for the larger 150 L cabin based fuel tank fitted for endurance.
Repainted white and fitted with Rothman's livery during this period.
Repurposed as a Porsche 959 Development car post 1984 Paris - Dakar Rally, the car was returned to a plain white finish.
Post it's life with Porsche, the car was purchased by Australian Porsche Importer (the father of Porsche Australia) Alan Hamilton, where he continued on using it for his own motorsport pursuits.
Alan claimed he purchased it as 'one for the collection' siting it's historical significance for the brand, however continued to use it himself including the 'Little Desert Rally' alongside navigator Jim Hardman, where they one the award for 'biggest jump' with this car.
Upon his purchase he noted the car wasn't in pristine condition, with the odd ding and a bit of rust, however the car was fully capable of rallying.
The car currently resides as a museum piece in The Fox Classic Car Collection.
