In the early 1990s, wealthy Hong Kong resident Michael Mak ordered 21 specially optioned 964 RSs from Porsche. All of the cars were specified with the factory N/GT (MO03) package, which came standard with a welded-in Matter roll cage, Scroth safety harnesses and numerous other pieces of racing equipment. However, when the cars arrived at Jebsen Motors (Hong Kong's official Porsche importer), Michael Mak refused to pay. Left with 21 unsold cars, Jebsen Motors sought alternative buyers. The Porsche Club Hong Kong tried encouraging its members to purchase the cars for use in a one-make racing series, but interest was minimal. To make matters worse, all of the cars were built in left-hand drive specification (COO German market), meaning they couldn't be used on the road in Hong Kong and would be near impossible to sell. With no viable buyers locally, Jebsen Motors & Porsche turned to nearby Japan. Art Sports was contacted, a prominent importer of high-end vehicles into Japan at the time. Art Sports agreed to purchase 20 of the 21 cars, passing on a Speed Yellow car that had been given a racing livery. Art Sports marketed them as 'Racing Package' cars and listed them for sale in 1995 for 8,800,000 each, a significant discount to their original sticker price. Even with the markdown, it took around six months to sell all 20 cars due to Japan's struggling economy and the release of the 993.
