Information

Petermax Müller was born in Potsdam in 1912 and started his motorsport career in the late 1930s, competing in rallies like the Monte Carlo Rallye with Auto Union brands. After World War II, he fled to Velpke near Helmstedt. right next to Wolfsburg, Volkswagen's home base, and set up a workshop in an abandoned barn. Between 1946 and 1949, he built six racing cars from scratch, using components sourced from the Volkswagen factory itself, an extraordinary feat in postwar, occupied Germany.

The most famous of these, later known as the Weltrekordwagen, was a streamlined, hand-built aluminum-bodied sports car mounted on a Kübelwagen chassis, with front suspension from a Schwimmwagen. both military VW-based vehicles. Power came from a modified 1,095cc four-cylinder VW engine ('Vogelsang'), producing 78 hp. At just 550 kg, it reached 215 km/h. The car raced simply as a 'VW Spezial,' with no official factory involvement.

Müller won the German championship in 1948 and 1949, raced at the Targa Florio in 1950 alongside Huschke von Hanstein, and later that year set 8 world records at Montlhéry. Of the six cars built, only one is known to survive. on display at the Prototyp Museum in Hamburg.
