One of two 1987 Oldsmobile Aerotech.
The Oldsmobile Aerotech Longtail, created in 1987, is a high-speed prototype built to showcase Oldsmobile’s Quad 4 turbo engine. Designed by Ed Welburn and driven by A.J. Foyt, it used a 1986 March IndyCar 85C chassis and a sleek long-tail carbon body for stability at extreme speed.
At Fort Stockton, Texas, on August 26th 1987, Foyt set a flying-mile record of 267.399 mph (430 km/h), with a top speed near 278 mph, making it the fastest four-cylinder car ever built.
Though General Motors ordered the cars destroyed, both 1987 Aerotech survived, hidden somewhere in Arizona for 30 years.
Rediscovered decades later by Matthew Katz, the original Longtail was restored in 2024 with GM’s support and by Batten Engineering in collaboration with the Petersen Museum, and set to be displayed at the 2025 Las Vegas Concours.
