Originally ordered by Professor Ignacio Barraquer, who drove the car from Libya to Alexandria.
The car remained with Barraquer's family until it was sold to Bruce McCaw in 2004.
When Jean Bugatti first laid eyes on the Autobahn-Kurier he went back home and designed the famed Type 57 Aérolithe as a rival.
The total amount of Autobahn-Kuriers that remain is up to debate, historians believe there are two, this one (the 540K) and a 500K with a 540k engine that is believed to be the 1934 Berlin Motor Show prototype with some modifications. Despite this, the factory claims 3 were made but there is no hard evidence to back this up.
