The fifth McLaren M26 constructed, Patrick Tambay predominantly used this chassis from the March 1978 South African Grand Prix. He did relatively well to finish fourth at Anderstorp and sixth in the British Grand Prix at Silverstone. During the second half of the year, Hunt tried his luck in the car but he could do no better than a seventh in the United States Grand Prix at Watkins Glen. Tambay raced the car once more early in the 1979 season at Interlagos
