Information
Delivered new to Dynamic Cassette International co-founder John Studholme, who kept the car until he part-exchanged it for a new F1 in April 1998. It was then sold by McLaren in February 1999 to its second owner, Micromuse founder Chris Dawes.
Four weeks later (on 21st March) after 1 pm that day, Dawes had taken the Mclaren out for a drive along with his personal assistant and friend. Following a heavy downpour, the roads were greasy and Dawes crashed the car at an accident black spot on the A120. He left the road at over 100mph and the car hit a tree which split the car in two and ruptured the fuel tank. The accident killed the owner/driver, Chris Dawes (39), his personal assistant, Fiona Newman (35), and friend David Lamp (37).
The ensuing fire was so intense that even the carbon tub burned ferociously.
Such was the force of impact, the engine was found 50 yards further up the road.
The remains of the Mclaren were crushed after the accident.
