Information
Two cars were built for the 1992 season, numbered 77 and 78, to be run by Mazdaspeed in the IMSA Camel GTP Championship. The RX-792P made its debut at the 1992 24 Hours of Daytona, but early reliability issues with heat management and rotary exhaust temperatures led to several retirements throughout the year. Despite these challenges, the car demonstrated impressive pace when reliable, with a best finish of fifth place at Watkins Glen. The #77 chassis served as the team’s primary entry for most of the season, driven by Price Cobb, Elliott Forbes-Robinson, and Butch Leitzinger.
The RX-792P’s development was cut short when IMSA announced the cancellation of the GTP category after 1992, forcing Mazda to end its programme after only one season. The car marked the final appearance of a four-rotor rotary engine in top-level prototype racing, closing the chapter on Mazda’s rotary era in international endurance competition. Only two RX-792P chassis were built, and both remain as significant examples of Mazda’s engineering innovation during the final years of IMSA’s GTP era.
