Information
Team Goh was on a high roll after winning Le Mans two years before in 2004 with an Audi R8 and they also won JGTC in 1996 with a McLaren F1 GTR of all cars so they have had a lot of success racing European cars.
This MC12 chassis was the one shown at the 2004 Geneva Motor Show on debut and raced throughout that year before being bought by Goh and prepared to be brought to Japan. Testing at Vallelunga on the long layout was done prior to its trip to Japan.
Jan Magnussen and 2004 Le Mans winner Seiji Ara were supposed to drive it in the 2006 Super GT season but sadly Jan fell ill shortly before the official testing days at Suzuka in March 2006 so had to stay in Denmark. He did test the car at Okayama, though.
So the testing days came and the best the MC12 could do was 1:55.354 in day 1 (best GT500 lap was 1:53.514 by the CALSONIC IMPUL Z) and 1.55.519 in day 2 (best time was 1:52.761), so quite far from the top competitors. The team said the car had the advantage on straights but loses all of that in corners, especially the ones taken at more than 170 km/h like 130R where up to half a second was lost!
Kazumichi Goh aimed at a 5-second gain compared to the FIA GT-spec MC12 at Vallelunga'a long layout but the best they did was 2.8 seconds less. At the end, he announced the team won't run the MC12 in Super GT due to it not being competitive enough so the Stile Corse team he entered the car for skipped that season.
