He had brain and lung contusions as well as severe leg fractures, which almost led to an amputation. After sent to hospital, the condition worsened, Donnelly's heart stopped beating twice, he was almost announced dead and even a priest was at presence. Miraculously, Donnelly not only survived but also recovered from his serious injuries, he could walk and even race again. Donnelly's F1 career ended after this accident, but he continued to race in smaller series.
