Information
First prototype of Espada
The first Espada prototype was built by Bertone and Lamborghini in 1967 68 as a bridge between the Marzal, Pirana and the production Espada. Its body was made using the wooden buck originally created for the Bertone Pirana, giving it a more conventional front end than the Marzal. Unlike the Marzal, which had a rear-mounted 2.0-liter inline-six and spectacular glass gullwing doors, the Espada prototype used 400 GT mechanicals, including its V12, and was designed around a front-engine GT layout. However, it still retained the Marzal’s huge gullwing doors and very low nose. The prototype also had unusual large side windows and was tested by Lamborghini’s factory drivers. Prototype originally had an interior, but it was later removed while the car was stored at the Lamborghini factory, leaving the surviving prototype without its interior. This prototype was replaced by the cleaner production design that debuted as the Espada at Geneva in 1968.
