Information
Chassis 123697, production number 25 of 448, is the only known 550 Barchetta modified directly by Pininfarina’s Special Projects Division (SPD). The car was commissioned by Ronald Spangler, founder of Prancing Horse Farm and longtime Ferrari dealer and collector in the United States.
At the time of the car’s commissioning in late 2000, all 550 Barchettas had been allocated to customers. However, with the direct involvement of Sergio Pininfarina, one order slot was acquired and redirected to SPD. The car was delivered from the factory in March 2001 and immediately sent to Pininfarina’s facility in Cambiano for modification.
The request was minimal: no changes to the bodywork, only custom paint and interior materials. The car was finished in a dual-tone livery, with Giallo Modena on top and a matte-painted English Tan section along the lower body and rear panel. This color scheme was not available from Ferrari and was executed solely by Pininfarina.
The interior was retrimmed in Cuoio leather on the seats, dash, door panels, steering wheel, and carpeting. The center console and instrument panel were finished in black Alcantara. These materials were selected to remain within U.S. homologation requirements.
A unique aluminum dashboard plaque distinguishes this car from all other Barchettas. In addition to the standard 25/448 serial number, it features a personal dedication: To my friend Ron Spangler Sergio Pininfarina. This inscription was added by Pininfarina independently, not by customer request.
This car marked the first post-Brunei project carried out by Pininfarina SPD and led to the division’s relaunch. It is the only Barchetta with SPD provenance and the only car known to feature this particular dual-tone finish and personal dedication from Sergio Pininfarina.
