Information
Crashed during the 1957 Mille Miglia after a worn out front tire exploded 70km before the finish, causing the car to collide with a telephone pole. The impact made the car go airborne, hit some spectators and finally stop in a stream next to the road.
The accident killed the driver Alfonso de Portago, his navigator Edmund Nelson and 10 Spectators, with another 20 being injured.
The tragedy marked the end of the classic mille miglia, as the italian government decided to ban all motor racing on public roads a few days later.
