Information
1966, 12 June, Driven by Luigi 'Coco' Chinetti and Charlie Kolb at the St. John the Baptist 6 hour GP, a Quebec/French Canadian holiday/race weekend at what might have been an FIA sanctioned event at St. Jovite. Chinetti Jr. had a small fuel leak for which he had been black flagged. Before he reached the pits he drove through the fire of an Elva BMW. He kept driving and was on the back side of the course when he realized he was on fire. He leapt out. Unfortunately, all the firefighting equipment was on the other side of the course with the flaming Elva. The fire was put out with dirt shoveled onto the pyre. The front end was not burnt and the rear body was spared because it was flipped open to get at the fire. The engine compartment and cockpit were extensively burned.
Although the Simeone Museum and other sources claim that this car won Le Mans in 1963, it was actually chassis 0816 that won, not this car, which is chassis 0814. Factory documents show that this car was still being repaired following the fire, and instead of submitting new paperwork for a replacement car, Scuderia Ferrari sent chassis 0816 to Le Mans under 0814's identity.
