Information
The Colani Horch Mega-Roadster is a one-off prototype created by industrial designer Luigi Colani in 1996. Built on a 1979 Chrysler chassis, it combined Colani’s avant-garde biodesign philosophy with an eclectic mechanical setup. Beneath its bodywork sat a Ford V8 rated at 620 horsepower, supplemented by numerous General Motors components.
When it first debuted, the Mega-Roadster appeared in silver, fitted with a hardtop covering the cabin and blackwall tires. Later, Colani resprayed it in a deep purple hue and added whitewall tires, it still have this look today.
Although styled as a Horch revival, the project was likely not authorized by Audi, the owner of the Horch name. Instead, it was said to be Colani’s follow-up to his earlier L’Aiglon concept car from two decades before. It even had the proposition of a 16-cylinder engine, but it never went real. While not as long as L’Aiglon, the Horch concept was equally ostentatious, particularly with its exaggerated hood and cowl-to-front-axle proportions.
The car was first introduced at the Essen Motor Show in October 1996. Years later, it resurfaced at a Swiss auction in 2019, with bad conditions, offered in a debt-collection sale. As of January 2025, the unique Mega-Roadster has been restorated and confirmed to reside in California, in the CareTakersCollection.
