Information
The Citroën DS PLR Mille-Pattes is a unique 10-wheeled experimental vehicle built in 1972 by Michelin, with help from Citroën, to test truck tires at high speeds. Measuring over 7 meters long and weighing nearly 9 tons, it was built from two Citroën DS chassis joined back-to-back and powered by two Chevrolet V8 engines.
The car also featured an 11th wheel, located at the center of the vehicle. Unlike the other tires, this wheel wasn't used for driving; it was a truck tire mounted on a built-in test drum, rotated by the vehicle itself. With sensors installed, Michelin could measure temperature, deformation, and endurance of the 11th tire under realistic conditions, at speeds exceeding 200 km/h, something no truck could achieve at that time.
The Mille-Pattes was used throughout the 1970s on Michelin’s Ladoux test track near Clermont-Ferrand, before being retired from service. Today, it is preserved and displayed at the L’Aventure Michelin Museum.
