1986 Road Atlanta race-winning Grand Touring Prototype:
After just one year of NASCAR competition, Chevrolet saw enough potential in Rick Hendrick's young racing organization to task them with a new project: fielding the Chevrolet Corvette IMSA GTP sportscar, powered by a 700+ horsepower turbocharged V6. The sportscar operation was based in Indianapolis and led by South African Ken Howes, who would go on to crew chief Ken Schrader in the NASCAR Cup Series before serving as Hendrick Motorsports' Vice President of Competition. This very Lola chassis was raced in the team's debut at Road America in August of 1985, co-driven by road-racing aces David Hobbs and Sarel van der Merwe. While the team competed through 1988, this chassis raced eight times from 1985-1986-earning four pole positions, including for the 1986 24 Hours of Daytona. Van der Merwe and Doc Bundy piloted this car to the team's maiden victory at Road Atlanta in April of 1986.
Fun Fact: While Van der Merwe and Bundy were responsible for the team's two victories at Road Atlanta and the West Palm Beach Street Circuit, Hendrick Motorsports Corvette GTPs were driven by the likes of Michael & John Andretti, Bobby Rahal, David Hobbs, Elliott Forbes-Robinson, Wally Dallenbach Jr., Vern Schuppan and others.
