This Type 251 was entered in the 1956 French Grand Prix at Reims, driven by Maurice Trintignant. This race would be the car’s only competitive appearance because it retired quickly due to a mechanical failure. This setback, combined with a lack of financial resources and the company’s difficult situation, led Bugatti to permanently abandon its racing program and to halt almost all automobile production shortly afterward.
This chassis has been stored a few years before being taken back by the Schlumpf Collection in Mulhouse, still today unrestored.
Classified as a 'Monument Historique' since the 14th of April 1978.
