The Bristol 400 nicknamed Eleanor began life as a standard Bristol 400 before receiving its dramatic lightweight bodywork from Zagato in 1955. The transformation turned the conservative British grand tourer into a sleek endurance racer, combining Bristol’s BMW-derived straight-six with Zagato’s aerodynamic Milanese styling. The car later gained an almost surreal chapter in its history when, during ownership in war-torn Europe decades later, it reportedly detonated a buried landmine in Libya, yet survived with repairable damage — a story that only amplified its mystique. Today, Eleanor is celebrated as one of the rarest Anglo-Italian hybrids of the 1950s: elegant, experimental, and improbably resilient.
