Information
Test car, never raced.
During a test on 1986 May 14th at Paul Ricard, Elio de Angelis's car had a rear wing failure with it suddenly came off at a speed of 180 mph. The car rolled over several times and fell over the barrier upside down, and the it caught fire. Due to lack of marshal and fireproof clothing, de Angelis wasn't rescued until 10 minutes later. To make it worse, the track didn't have a helicopter to send him to hospital. De Angelis was transferred to hospital 30 minutes later, which was already too late. He died in the next morning at an age of 28. In fact the crash itself wasn't even close to be fatal, de Angelis only had a broken collar bone and burnt back from the crash. The reason of his death was he inhaled too much smoke, which was clearly the result of delayed rescue.
Elio de Angelis' death made Paul Ricard to be changed to a shorter layout immediately in French Grand Prix that year, which skipped Verriere curves where he crashed and only used half of the original 1.8km Mistral straight to slow the cars down. His death was a huge blow on Brabham's morale, which was considered as a factor of the team's downfall.
