Information
The original BMW X5 designed by Frank Stephenson was unveiled at the 1999 Motor Show at the beginning of that year, opening a new segment to the world - the SAV, Sports Activity Vehicle, comprised of five-door vehicles that were equally capable on the road as off it, while also giving a somewhat sporty design and appeal as opposed to the boxiness of both off-road cars and minivans.
The X5 Le Mans is an one-off prototype first-gen X5 built to conmemorate BMW's 1999 Le Mans 24h win. It's powered by a de-restricted P75 NA V12 engine, the one used in the BMW V12 LMR in 1999 but without restrictor air plates (not the S70/2 or S70/3 engine as many sources falsely claim) and got a custom bodykit, race driver's seat, stripped interior and a lowered suspension. The rims were swapped for BBS ones, yhe engine cover was made by a revolutionary laminated carbon-Kevlar fabric and the hood featured a massive opening that serves to conduct the radiator exhaust air from the engine outside. Hans-Joachim Stuck lapped the Nordschleife in 7:42.253 back in 2001. The car resides at the BMW Classic headquarters and is frequently exhibited at the BMW Museum.
Despite never being put into production, the BMW X5 M that debuted in 2009 exists thanks to the X5 Le Mans and the M moniker now extends to other SAVs in the line-up.
