Information
3.0 CSL Group 2 Works Art Car by Alexander Calder
This 3.0 CSL is Alexander Calder's creation and the first ever BMW art car, the first one in a long line of models with bespoke liveries created by various world-renowned artists. Andy Warhol, Jeff Koons, Ken Done, Frank Stella, Cao Fei and many more. It all started when Hervé Poulain, a French Auctioneer and race driver, approached Calder with the idea to make an art car. Calder was by then known for his 'Mobiles' - constructions that would be set into motion by the wind.
Why BMW? Because Jochen Neerpasch, BMW's race director, was keen to the proposal, as suggested by Jean Todt.
This 3.0 CSL was painted using only primary colors and the shapes and curves naturally add a sense of speed to the car. This car eventually went on to race in the 1975 Le Mans 24h with Sam Posey, Poulain himself and Jean Guichet. It didn't finish it unfortunately and after that attempt it was stored away to be exhibited.
