Information

On August 1, 1969, during practice for the German Grand Prix at Nürburgring, German driver Gerhard Mitter was killed in an accident with his BMW 269 Formula 2 car. While driving through the Schwedenkreuz section after the Flugplatz corner, he lost control of the car and crashed into the barrier and trees. The exact cause was never determined, but it was suspected that a failure in the suspension or steering (possibly a broken steering link) caused the crash at about 250 km/h. Mitter was pulled from the car alive but died on the way to the hospital. After the accident, BMW withdrew all its cars from the event, and the BMW 269 project was abandoned. The incident marked an important moment in motorsport history, highlighting the risks and lack of safety on circuits like Nürburgring.
