The very first Eagle Indy car, this chassis was driven in the 1966 Indy 500 by Dan Gurney. A slipping clutch on each of his three attempts thwarted his attempts to snatch pole position, and eventually he had to start a lowly 19th. Unfortunately, this put him right in the firing line of an opening lap accident and the race was over for Gurney before it had really started. Fitted with the stock-block V8, the car was brought out again for Jochen Rindt to race at the following Indy 500. The talented Austrian would go on to retire after 108 of the 200 laps due to a broken valve. In the following years, the car continued to be campaigned in private hands. While in the ownership of Bob Sutherland, the car was completely restored to its original configuration by Jim Robbins
