Bio
The D'Ieteren family is one of Belgium’s most prominent business dynasties, known for their leadership of D'Ieteren Group, a diversified international company rooted in the automotive sector. The family's entrepreneurial history dates back to 1805, when Jozef (Jean-Joseph) D'Ieteren, a Dutch-born carpenter, established a workshop in Brussels initially focused on building horse-drawn carriages.
Over more than two centuries, the D'Ieteren family adapted their business to major technological and economic shifts, evolving from artisanal coachbuilding to industrial-scale car body manufacturing, and later to automobile importation, assembly, and distribution. Key milestones include securing contracts with prestigious brands like Minerva and Hispano-Suiza after World War I, assembling Studebaker and Volkswagen vehicles in Belgium post-World War II, and expanding into car rental and vehicle glass repair.
Today, the D'Ieteren family retains a majority stake in the group, with ownership close to 44.7%, and their fortune is estimated at over €6.5 billion as of 2025. The business has been handed down through multiple generations, maintaining its status as a family-led enterprise and a significant force in Belgium’s industrial and economic landscape.
