Bio
Jean Sage (1941 2009) was a French motorsport executive and former racing driver. He began his career as a rally codriver and later competed in sports cars and Formula Three. In the mid-1970s, he partnered with Gérard Larrousse and Paul Archembaud to create Ecurie Elf Switzerland, the team that supported Jean-Pierre Jabouille’s 1976 FIA Formula Two championship.
Sage was later appointed by Larrousse to manage Renault’s Formula One team, leading the brand’s pioneering turbocharged F1 program. Under his management, Renault achieved its first Grand Prix win with Jabouille at the 1979 French GP in Dijon and remained competitive through the early 1980s. In 1983, the team narrowly missed the championship with Alain Prost, who finished two points behind the title winner. Sage remained at Renault until their F1 withdrawal in 1987.
After Renault, Sage joined Ferrari France (Charles Pozzi SA), where he oversaw the entry of a Ferrari F40 in the IMSA GTO class during the 1989 1990 seasons with drivers including Jabouille, Jean Alesi, and Jean-Louis Schlesser.
In the 1990s and 2000s, Sage focused on historic racing. He co-founded the Ferrari Historic Challenge and built a private collection of historically significant cars, particularly Ferraris with racing histories. He lived in Annecy, France, where he remained active in vintage motorsport until his death in 2009 at the age of 68.
